Washburn Tech on Thursday held its 2023 National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day. The event recognized its new recruiting class as they signed letters of intent to attend the college in the fall.
Kansas industry leaders participated by greeting and shaking the hands of incoming students. Among those leaders, Kansas Manufacturing Council Executive Director Brandie McPherson said the event was an important opportunity to welcome the state’s future workforce onto their professional path.
“The Kansas Chamber and Kansas Manufacturing Council are proud to partner with Washburn Tech at this most important event,” McPherson said. “We are thrilled to support our young professionals as they pursue an education in skilled trades which will contribute to a strong workforce for Kansas businesses.”
As part of a national event sponsored by the National Coalition of Certification Center, the signing day mirrors the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes who commit to play sports in college. It not only honors students entering a technical field but also celebrates the dignity of the work they will do.
Employers throughout Kansas rely on Washburn Tech for its preparation of the state’s future workforce. The college serves both high school and adult students pursuing skilled trades.
“We hire a lot of individuals that graduate from these programs here at Washburn Tech, so it’s a win for everyone in the community,” Mars Wrigley Senior Talent Acquisition Partner Steven Vickery said in an article. “We are expanding so we are growing jobs so it’s good for everyone in the community.”
Washburn Tech offers more than 30 career programs in several divisions: Construction, Design and Technology, Health Occupations, Hospitality and Human Services, Manufacturing and Transportation.
With a strong economy amidst labor shortages, Kansas employers are struggling to fill positions. Many in the state’s business community applaud efforts to welcome and encourage tomorrow’s workforce.
