Attendees at the first 2023 Conversations with the Kansas Chamber event in June enjoyed an opportunity to network and hear from banking experts about recent closings and other headline-grabbing events happening in the industry.
Reception Sponsor Kansas Bankers Association partnered with the Chamber for the event to help Kansas businesses engage in discussion about the states’ economic future.
“It was a really nice intimate event with Q&A panels of banking industry leaders,” said Kansas Chamber Director of Events Jeanna Lee. “They talked about relevant things going on here in Kansas and strengths of the Kansas banking industry compared to other states.”
Moderated by Chamber President and CEO Alan Cobb, the conversation’s expert panel that included:
- Brad Rucker, Home Bank President
- Sara Girard, Central National Bank CEO
- Mike Maddox, CrossFirst Bankshares President & CEO
These banking thought leaders shared their experiences, insights, and expertise, providing valuable knowledge and perspectives that shape business strategies and propel Kansas organizations forward.
“I would want to reassure all of our Kansas businesses that the Kansas banking industry is incredibly strong.” Girard said when asked about what she would say to business leaders concerned about the country’s banks. “Economic cycles are not new to us, we’re prepared with adequate reserves, sufficient capital, and liquidity. We are focused on supporting the economic vitality of our local communities.”
Panelists also discussed the federal regulatory environment, the important differences between big business banks and charter banks, and how to establish trust in the industry.
“I think there are a lot of myths out there and a lot of misconceptions of the banking industry.” Maddox said. “You see things happen on the coast, the banks in California and New York, and we’re not like that here in the Midwest. Sometimes we all get painted with the same brush.”
Rucker discussed the importance of relationships between banks and businesses and how the banking process becomes more efficient when bankers get to know their commercial clients.
“They get to know what’s going on with that business,” Rucker said. “When the customer does have a loan request or questions, they already know what’s going on within that business. It’s easier than just getting a cold call.”
The Conversations with the Kansas Chamber series focuses on issues and concerns important to the Kansas business community. The program’s question and answer format provides a great opportunity for Chamber Members and their guests to hear from business leaders, elected officials, candidates for public office and others.
The Kansas Chamber will host the next Conversations event on Tuesday, August 29 at The Venue in Leawood. Those interested in attending can learn more at www.KSConvos.com.
